The History of Willowbrae Parish Church

The church building has shaped the identity, wellbeing and social life of the community for more than 130 years. Funded by the bequest of James Smith, its construction was a deliberate act of philanthropy: the building was intended as a gift for community benefit, reflecting values of stewardship, shared space and collective belonging. Built in Gothic architectural style, the structure is both practical and characterful. Its foundation stone was laid in 1891, and the church opened in 1892, with furnishings and equipment paid for by members of the congregation.

The Upper Hall was opened in 1914 and immediately requisitioned by the army for billeting troops for World War I. The Church Centre extension added in 1977.
